We’re in the process of considering how we can improve the data presentations for the 2014 Environmental Performance Index (EPI), which will launch next January. While researching data mapping and presentations, I came across the tool CartoDB, which aims to make visually-stunning data presentation easy enough for everyone to do. Uploading data to CartoDB and doing a simple presentation of geospatial data is easy enough. What I like is the ability to edit and upload data tables and see changes in the map view automatically. The ability for us to tweak data and have control over data tables has been a major concern for us in consulting with potential web vendors, so I am glad to see that this technology exists. Being unfamiliar with javascript coding, I found some of the more advanced modules provided by the folks at Vizzuality a little more challenging. However, Andrew Hill at Vizzuality was nice enough to help me with my code so that I could generate the map above. The ability for me to dig a little into this amazing technology and new form of data management gives me hope that we’ll be able to come up with a cost-effective yet visually cutting-edge solution for our data display needs.
