Here’s a description of our course:
The Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy (YCELP) and the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) at Columbia University have been global leaders in the field of environmental performance indices for over a decade. This course will introduce participants to the 2012 Environmental Performance Index (EPI) and Pilot Trend Environmental Performance Index (Trend EPI), and then describe the EPI methodology as a tool for monitoring performance on a range of key environmental issues. These issues include air and water quality, the environmental burden of disease, forestry, agriculture, fisheries, biodiversity, energy, and greenhouse gas emissions. Special attention will be given to the Pilot Trend EPI, which allows countries for the first time to evaluate their progress or decline on each environmental issue over the last decade. Both the 2012 EPI and Trend EPI provide countries with the ability to compare performance relative to their peers, with respect to GDP and geographic region. The course will also explain the EPI data and methodology, and aims to provide participants with the tools necessary to develop national and sub-national indicators and composite indices by which to gauge progress toward sustainable development goals.
