This week, DDL Research Scientist Diego Manya will present a “soft launch” of our 2024 Urban, Environment and Social Inclusion Index at the Global Research and Innovation Symposium, hosted by the City of São Paulo, Brazil as part of the ICLEI World Congress 2024.

The ICLEI World Congress aims to propel sustainable urban development and equitable adaptation to local and regional challenges. The World Congress will highlight community-based initiatives and experiences through multiple events in adherence to this year’s main themes of equity and resilience.

These events include an expert-led Research & Innovation Marketplace to inspire, equip, and mobilize local and regional governments towards a sustainable and resilient future.

The Research and Innovation Marketplace at the ICLEI World Congress 2024 has four thematic areas: digitalization, finance, system transformation and governance & urban planning. This Marketplace brings together an interdisciplinary group of experts in the private, public, nonprofit and academic sectors to facilitate radical collaboration to meet our shared sustainability objectives.

Manya is presenting as part of the Digitalization theme on June 18th, where he will introduce some of the key findings of the 2024 UESI to local governments, researchers and partners in attendance. Since the final results of the 2024 UESI will be launched in early September alongside a refreshed website, the objective of this presentation is to solicit early feedback from urban practitioners and policymakers.

Throughout the event, he will also present a poster highlighting early results of the 2024 UESI in the ICLEI World Congress Knowledge Hall, which will feature various research and innovative projects from attendees. He will also attend panels related to data and AI for urban and climate resilience and engage in conversation with cities and researchers aiming to gain important feedback in preparation for the UESI 2024 Report Launch that will take place later this year in the Innovate4cities conference.

The symposium was co-designed by the City of São Paulo in partnership with Mission Innovation Net-Zero Compatible Innovations Initiative, UNFCCC Global Innovation Hub, and Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM), and is being delivered as a complementary event to the Innovate4Cities 2024 Conference. This event was also co-organized by São Paulo School of Management of Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV EAESP) and the University of São Paulo (USP).
